BORONIA WOMEN'S PRISON, BENTLEY
The construction of a new pre-release prison for women in Bentley was to provide a bridge between other higher security institutions and a return to society. Interestingly, significant portions of the landscape were to be installed and maintained by the inmates.
The design implications for such a proposal required a unique approach to the landscape. Safety and security naturally were key issues. Design considerations included:
| |
The creation of a distinct landscape within the site that puts visitors at ease whilst also providing an enriching environment for residents and staff;
|
| |
The provision of verge screening and streetscape treatments, thereby providing a considerate and positive contribution to the locality;
|
| |
Allowing for the optimum operation of security and surveillance systems;
|
| |
The creation of a cohesive overall site character whilst providing quite different qualities of spaces to the residential and civic zones;
|
| |
The provision of a safe environment with particular regard to the creation of domestic retreat gardens to the residential units;
|
| |
The creation of spaces that are adaptable and suited for multiple uses and users;
|
| |
Limiting the creation of spaces that have no function or that are difficult to maintain and supervise.
