A-SHED MARITIME ACTIVITY CENTRE, FREMANTLE

Blackwell & Associates headed a study into the feasibility for an "activity centre" to be housed within the ‘A-Shed’ building on Victoria Quay, Fremantle Harbour. The Maritime Activity Centre was intended to become the focal point for children’s edu-recreational activities within the overall Cultural Maritime Precinct, which is set in the midst of the busy port. The existing Maritime (shipwrecks/marine archaeology) Museum and the new Maritime Museum, whilst child friendly, are by the nature of the exhibits, not intended to be a ‘hands on’ experience. A new children’s learning centre in the adjacent A-Shed building that allowed for interaction and play as part of the learning experience at a scale and level of finish suitable for enthusiastic younger visitors was conceived to address this aspect.

The Activity Centre aims to engage the visitor in actual ‘sea faring’ type activities within an environment dripping with real maritime artefacts, materials, sights and sounds. The activity centre is currently under construction.
