SHENTON DOG REFUGE

The existing conditions of the Shenton Dog Refuge represent an outdated, poorly sited group of kennels that lack functionality, legibility and presentation. The health of resident dogs is a concern for all staff involved with their management. Most of the current problems can be attributed to the sub-standard facilities and their siting.

The main objective of the Master Plan is to create a parkland setting that will activate the site to its full extent and provide for current and future demands. By providing a variety of functional spaces throughout, the Refuge is envisaged to be highly efficient both in terms of operational requirements and recreational needs of the dogs, management, staff and visitors. Another key objective is to retain as much of the existing natural vegetation without compromising operational spaces or facilities and to integrate seamlessly into the surrounding Shenton Bushland through appropriate plant selection.

The Master Plan employs a combination of fencing, planting, level changes and use of appropriate surface materials that contribute to developing a vastly improved environment for the circulation, day-to-day operation and play/training activities for the dogs. It has also resulted in a significantly improved aesthetic, acoustic and hygienic quality to the whole refuge site.
