Following completion of the Scarborough Beach Urban Design Master Plan - Blackwell & Associates completed the design, documentation and contract administration of the $10M first stage of the Master Plan.

The centrepiece of this work, a world-class multifunction amphitheatre, is planned to become home to all manner of events ranging from small community orientated ceremonies, to state, national and international sporting and entertainment events.

The gala opening, on 27 January 2007, revolved around the Tri-Nations Beach Cricket Championships. The venue is also home to the 2007 National Beach Volleyball Championships and the National Surf Lifesaving Championships in March 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Other components of the first stage include: broad grassed terraces overlooking the beach designed for picnicking and/or events; a major shade structure incorporating events lighting; a new CCTV network; a revitalised beachfront commercial strip; re-routing and integration of the existing cycleway; and upgraded ‘entry statement’ highway planting. New lighting and disabled access is provided throughout.
